In 1996, Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was charged with drug possession after the death of the bands keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin at the Regency Hotel in Manhattan.
Jonathan was touring with the Smashing Pumpkins. He was found dead of an apparent heroin overdose in his room.
The two had injected heroin together and passed out. Police reported that when Jimmy woke up at around 3:30 a.m., he couldn't wake up Melvoin and called the bands security manager for help! They tried to revive him and even tried putting him in the shower. When paramedica arrived at 4:30a.m., they decalred Jonathan dead. That is when Chamberlin was arrested and charged with criminal possession of heroin, a misdemeanor, after traces of the drug were found in a needle in the room. He was promptly fired from The Smashing Pumpkins. A couple of years later, he was back in the band.
